Abstract: Psychosomatic medicine has been a subspeciality within the field of Western medicine psychiatry for more than half a century. It is that speciality as the Greek etymology of the term implies i.e. study of the effects of the mind (psyche) upon the body (soma). However, currently it studies not just the physical conditions caused by psychological factors (ex: Somatoform disorders) but also studies psychiatric conditions that arise as a consequence such as delirium or concurrently with medical conditions, for example depression in cancer.
