Description

Abstract: Thyroid diseases are not specifically discussed in Caraka Samhita. There is no Sanskrit name for Hypo or Hyperthryoridism. This is not to say these diseases did not exisit at that time but rather, they were understood to be directly related to the function of one's agni and the process of digestion. They were understood to be earlier stages of pathogenesis of other diseases.

Ayurveda is clear in pointing out that even though jatharagni is seated in the stomach, it manipulates and manages all other agnis in the body. In that manipulation and management, the possilbility of dysfunction is very high and; as dysfunction occurs, changes can be seen and felt. These changes could be viewed as "moving out of one's dynamic balance from their personal normal", which, left unchecked has a good probability of developing into a disorder/disease.
