Ayurveda and the Ritual of Retreat

The word "retreat" may conjure up varying images, but its popular meaning suggests leaving the busyness of everyday responsibilities to take time for inner peace and contemplation. The concept of pausing to take time within is as old as man's awareness of the subtle self. The Christian Orthodox seek the refuge of the monastery, Europeans the healing waters of the "baths", and yogis retreat to the forest. Indeed it is said that the great rishis meditated in the forest and thus learned the eternal truths that they have imparted in the sacred literature of India.
