by Nitin Ramchandra Waghmare and Jyoti Brijesh Gavali
Abstract
Background: Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is a common condition but when associated with risk factors can lead to encephalopathy. The objective of this paper is to highlight the use of herbal medicine along with phototherapy as a treatment protocol.
Case presentation: A three day old neonate presented with yellow discoloration of skin and eyes, and decreased activity. The blood group of the mother was Rh negative and the blood group of the baby was Rh positive which indicates a risk factor. The standard treatment protocol with a raised total serum bilirubin contains phototherapy and exchange blood transfusion. Herbal medicine was considered an option for exchange blood transfusion and has shown proven results.
Discussion: There are many therapeutic options mentioned in the classical text which are unexplored. Herbal medications are cost effective and better options that can be utilized as a standard protocol after conducting clinical trials.
