Type of Study: This is a prospective observational study to determine the safety of stand-alone Ayurvedic treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) compared to conventional western treatment. Stroke is a leading cause of severe disability worldwide but treatment options are limited. Ischemic stroke can be treated with angiointervention or intravenous thrombolytic therapy, but treatment must be administered within a short time following the stroke. For example, only a small number of patients are eligible to receive thrombolytic therapy. The therapy itself is often not effective because the brain tissue has already been damaged and it is estimated that only 12%–25% of those patients that are eligible to receive thrombolytic therapy actually benefit from the treatment.
